Key #5 The Guilt Train

Don't wallow in guilt for what you did or didn't do. It changes nothing!

Guilt is a natural response and it’s appropriate when you do something that goes against your values. Your conscience makes you feel uncomfortable when you disobey rules that you really think should be obeyed. However, guilt implies choice. There’s also unhealthy guilt
that results when you blame yourself for things that aren’t your responsibility and that you can’t possibly control, such as the moods of others. This kind of guilt is often rooted in low self-esteem.

If you link yourself to the moods of people around you...if you take responsibility and think you’re to blame for the way they feel...you might have a distorted image of your own importance by assuming that whatever happens is your fault, and it’s your responsibility to fix it.

You’re not responsible to “fix” your spouse’s life. You’re not responsible for your child’s success in college, in business or in a relationship. Your family, your spouse and your children are responsible to and for themselves. By taking responsibility for others, we encourage them to be dependent on us, which doesn’t help us...and it doesn’t help them. Remember, there’s only one person you’re responsible for...you!

IT IS ALL IN YOUR HEAD!
