Use your talents. The woods would be very silent if no birds sang
except those that sang best.
~~Henry Van Dyke
Helen Keller said that “life is either a daring adventure or it is nothing”. For your life to have meaning, you must take risks to find out who you are and what you want. Life without riskisn’t living at all—it’s just staying in the same place.
When you were a child were you told things like:
- Don’t expect too much
- Don’t set your heart on it
- Don’t rock the boat
- Be careful—you might get what you asked for
The underlying message here is that it’s dangerous to risk, to hope, to be happy or to expect your life to be great. It implies that there’s a scarcity of the good life, and you’re not good enough to get a share of what little there is.
If you’re convinced that if you can’t do it right you shouldn’t do it at all, then you’re not giving yourself permission to experiment with life – to take a risk and stretch yourself to your true potential. Most of us don’t do things right the first time. We need to learn how to do things. But if you don’t get it right at first and then you don’t encourage yourself to try again, you’re limiting your life. It’s easy to try, fail, and then give up – to slip up and quit. It’s easy to settle for less with the excuse -- “I tried that and it didn’t work”.
Taking a risk can create anxiety, which can hold you back. But don’t avoid risk-taking because you’re afraid you’re not good enough or that you’ll fail. Step off the edge...you will soar.
IT IS ALL IN YOUR HEAD!
