Accept praise and believe it as readily as you would criticism.
Open Your Mind, Open Your Life. A Little Book of Eastern Wisdom
When faced with a compliment, do you accept it or bat it away like a bee buzzing near your face? Why is it that praise is so difficult to accept, but we embrace criticism like a comfy robe on a frosty evening?
It has a lot to do with how much you like yourself. When you're dragging around that anchor covered in stickers like "I'm not good enough", I never do anything right", "I try so hard but never make the grade", is it any wonder that you don't believe in yourself?
Just for today, when someone says something nice to you, accept it as true. And tomorrow, do it again. Continue, day by day, to accept compliments in the spirit in which they are given. Don't look for some ulterior motive...just believe it as truth. The more often you do this, the easier it becomes.
If you want a more scholarly explanation of why you can't accept praise, I've added a link to a Google talk titled Emotional First Aid by Guy Winch. It's laced with psychological explanations and humor and it's easy to understand.
Emotional First Aid
As you learn to accept the good things people say about you, you're chipping away at the chain connected to the anchor you're dragging around.
IT IS ALL IN YOUR HEAD!
