Wisely and slowly. They stumble that run fast.
As I walked my dogs the other day, I came upon a candy someone had dropped on the sidewalk. And covering the piece of candy were hundreds and hundreds of ants scurrying around in a frenzy, as if being on this piece of candy was their entire life’s work. I was reminded of society today and how multitasking is held as a virtue instead of an insidious way to cram more things on to our “To Do” Lists. We’ve become a society of “doers” afraid to slow down and relax, afraid to waste a few precious moments doing nothing but “being”.
With that in mind, here are some things that you can do to slow down. The author of this list is unknown:
*Remember that you are not responsible for doing it all yourself, right now.
*Taste your food. God gives it to delight as well as to nourish.
*Talk slower. Talk less. Don’t talk. Communication isn’t always measured by words.
*Quit planning how you will use what you know. God’s gifts just are. Be grateful and their purpose will be clear.
*Set your own pace. When someone is pushing you, it’s okay to tell them they’re pushing.
*Direct your life with purposeful choices, not with speed and efficiency. The best musician is the one who plays with expression and meaning, not the one who finishes first.
*Once in a while, turn down the lights, the volume, the throttle and the invitations. Less really can be more.
*Let go. Nothing is usually the hardest thing to do -- but often, it’s the best.
*Count your blessings – one at a time and slowly, savoring each and every one.
This week I challenge you to slow down – even if you have to force yourself. Every day, do at least one thing from the above list. Or find your own way to take a few moments daily to slow your life down. Your body and mind will thank you.
