Risky Business

“And then the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was
more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”
                                                                                                           ~Anais Nin~

How much risk are you willing to take in your life? I’m not talking about life and death risk, I’m referring to the risk involved in stepping out of the comfort of your daily life and trying something
new. I’m always surprised by the number of people I meet who have wonderful, exciting plans that they keep putting off. Something “more important” always seems to pop up in their lives and moves
them off track.

I taught a class recently, and when I asked who wanted to share a goal they had, one woman raised her hand and proudly said “I’m writing a book.” “How wonderful.” I said. “And when will it be
finished?” That question stopped her cold. You see, she hadn’t really started writing yet. She’d made a few notes over the years but nothing more than that. Then she told the class that it was
“a life-long project”. But in reality, it wasn’t a project at all.  It was just a dream that she hadn’t acted on. As we talked further, the truth came out. “I probably don’t have anything to say that
people would want to read about.” So her dream of writing was stalled because she wasn’t willing to risk putting her thoughts on paper to share with others.

Then there was another woman who devoted 20 years of her life to one man, always hoping that they’d get married and start a family.  When she turned 50, he left her for greener pastures. And
here she was, never married and childless -- and alone. She had used up those years living for someone else and turning her back on herself. She was devastated and was having a difficult time getting over how she had “wasted” her life.

If money were no object -- if you had all the time in the world and no other obligations to get in the way -- what dream would you bring into reality for yourself? Think about what’s rattling around in
the back of your mind. What is it that you want to do but just can’t seem to find the time? What is it that you would love to do if only you didn’t have to show up for work every day, take care
of the kids, or finish cleaning the basement? If you knew you had 6 months to live, would you do it then? Or would you keep putting it off and risk carrying your dream with you to your grave?

If your birth certificate came with a guarantee, would you want a refund? Take a look at your life and honestly decide if it’s the life you’d live if you had a choice. If not, then take at least one step today to point yourself in the direction you really want to go. Then take another step next week, and another and another until you reach what it is that is truly your passion.  You are the only person who can do this for yourself. So gather up your courage and take a risk. Be the bud that risks unfolding
into the blossom you know you can be.

~~Weekly Challenge~~

Take a blank sheet of paper and write down 5 things that you’ve always wanted to do. These can be big like writing a book or small like taking music lessons.

Put a completion date next to each item.

Then take one step, no matter how small it is, every day to bring these things into reality for yourself. Remember, you’re the only person who can do this for yourself, so get started.

Blessings,

Cindy
