Nothing Will Change Until You Do!

I once worked with a client who wanted to get into better shape for her upcoming high school reunion. I outlined steps she could take to modify her meals so she was eating healthier food
and consuming fewer calories, and I suggested adding exercise to the mix to quicken the
weight loss process.


For every suggestion I threw on the table, she came back with a reason it wouldn’t work for
her. The meal planning was too involved, not eating the same meals as her family meant
preparing two meals and she didn’t have time for that, she’d love to fit exercise into her
schedule, but her time was tight and with her back problems, there was a limit  to what she
could do. . . and on and on.

So I asked her just how serious she was about making this change in her life. She said she
was very serious, but she couldn’t do any of the things I had suggested so far. I asked her
what she could suggest and she replied “Well if I knew what to do, I’d be doing it.”

I held back on a response because I sensed that no matter what I suggested, she would
throw up a barrier. In essence, she wanted to get into better shape by eating the same foods
she was eating now and continuing her pattern of not exercising. She wanted to change by
doing the same thing she had always done. But, isn’t that the definition of  insanity – doing
the same thing and expecting a different result?

You can’t expect to make a change in your life without changing who you are. You can’t
expect to be healthier by remaining a person who eats the wrong foods. You can’t
expect to be more fit by remaining a person who doesn’t exercise. You can’t expect to
be kinder by remaining a person who is judgmental. You can’t expect to be confident
by remaining a person who watches life from the fringes.  You must be willing to change
who you are to change your behavior.

So the next time you try to change something in your life and it doesn’t seem to be
working, step back and take a long, hard look at yourself. If you haven’t changed who
you are, that might be the problem.


~~Weekly Challenge~~

If you do the same thing you’ve always done, you’ll get the same thing you’ve always
gotten. Remember these words and take them seriously. For any change you want to make:


· Find someone who already embodies the change you want to make.  If you want to
  lose weight, find someone who has.  If you want to start an exercise program, find
  someone who exercises. If you want to change your career, find someone who has
  made a career change.
     
· When you find that person, determine what their values, beliefs and attitudes are.
  What is their inner map of reality? What actions do they take daily? How do they
  live their lives differently than you?

· Change how you think and act -- change whatever it is about yourself that is blocking
  the results you want.

· If you take these steps, you will be successful.
